Encaustic Tiles by Craig Peebles

Craig Peebles stands at the forefront of a vibrant renaissance in Encaustic Tile making, leading Welby & Wright, his contemporary tileworks in Edinburgh; reinventing this historic medium for contemporary audiences.

What Are Encaustic Tiles?

Encaustic tiles are decorative floor or wall tiles where the pattern is created by different colours of clay, rather than just a surface glaze. The coloured clays are inlaid to form the design, which means the pattern lasts even as the tile wears down. Traditionally handmade, encaustic tiles have a rich history and are known for their durability and striking, colourful designs. They’re perfect for adding a splash of heritage charm and character to any space.

Limited Edition Commemorative Encaustic Tiles

Edition of 5

Did you know it’s common to give the gift of porcelain on your 20th anniversary? We were honoured to be commissioned to mark this very special milestone; commemorating a couple who first said “I do” against the majestic backdrop of Edinburgh Castle as fireworks lit the sky two decades ago. This bespoke encaustic tile captures not only their enduring love but also the spirit of Edinburgh and Scottish heritage.

Inspired by the Traditional Scottish Blessing : "Lang may yer lum reek!" — "Long may your chimney smoke!"

A heartfelt phrase passed down through generations. In days gone by, a chimney sending smoke skyward was a sign of warmth, health, prosperity and happiness. This blessing has endured as a toast during Hogmanay as fireworks explode over Auld Reekie.

Sorrento Lemon - Handcrafted Encaustic Art Tile
£125.00

Sorrento — Handcrafted Encaustic Tile

A tile born from sun-washed memories, slow holidays, and the simple pleasure of good food shared outdoors.

Sorrento is a circular encaustic tile inspired by summers on the Amalfi Coast — lemons hanging heavy on the trees, slices cut and shared and the ritual of making food together. Designed as both artwork and architectural detail, this piece was originally commissioned to sit proudly on a hand-built garden pizza oven, where craft, memory and heat come together

At its centre is a bright yellow lemon with green leaves and sky blue inlay, all set against a clean white body. Alongside it, a lemon slice is cleverly divided into eight segments — a subtle nod to a sliced pizza — blending humour, storytelling, and design into a single enduring tile.
