This exciting exhibition has been created and curated by artists Danny Callaghan (Ceramic City Stories, Stoke-on-Trent) and Craig Peebles (Welby & Wright, Edinburgh). It reflects a two-year creative collaboration driven by a shared love for tiles and architectural ceramics.
Artist Ruth Impey (Glasgow) will also be exhibiting and will present an additional display telling the story of Scotland’s forgotten industrial potteries (50 Pots). Contemporary work will also feature including ‘Glasgow Smogware’ & ‘Beithir’ mosaic tiles from Stockingfield Bridge made in partnership with artist Louise Nolan (Make It Glasgow).
Visitors in Stoke-On-Trent will also be able to glimpse behind the scenes of The Firing Line, a manufacturer that still produces ‘Dust Pressed’ tiles using 100 year old technology and traditional techniques.
Artist and Master Tiler Craig Peebles was born into the tile industry, He started his apprenticeship at 13, learning from his father and a skilled team of Master Craftsmen. In tandem, He built an extensive art portfolio and graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2000. Aiming to become Scotland's leading authority in tessellated and encaustic tile design, Craig merged craft with art, honouring the past while embracing the present.
In his practice, Craig has sought to incorporate 21st century techniques, atypical subject matter and a playful, subversive and political voice to reinvigorate encaustic tile design - a stereotypically antiquated medium. His own renaissance of these ‘Burnt In’ masterpieces.
Artist and Historian Danny Callaghan has worked in a wide range of arts, heritage and cultural industries roles for more than 25 years. His artistic practice has also been broad based; site and context specific public art, creative interpretation and street art. He has a life-long passion for tiles, art mosaic and architectural ceramics.
Danny grew up in The Potteries; he is passionate about the city’s cultural and economic renewal. He believes Stoke-on-Trent’s unique history of ceramic production, and truly global legacy and links, provide an essential and powerful driver for local regeneration & future growth.
